What is lead routing in Salesforce?
Lead routing is the process of automatically assigning new leads in Salesforce to the right person or team for follow-up. Instead of manually deciding who should contact each prospect, routing rules distribute leads based on criteria like territory, product knowledge, rep availability, language, or workload.
Smart lead routing tools - like Distribution Engine - go a step further by letting you design and automate these workflows directly inside Salesforce. Leads can be instantly assigned to the best rep for the job, keeping speed-to-lead high and ensuring every inquiry gets timely attention.
With Distribution Engine, there’s no code, no external systems, and no risk of leads slipping through the cracks. It’s 100 % Salesforce-native automation that helps sales teams respond faster, work smarter, and convert more opportunities.
How is Distribution Engine different to Salesforce's own lead assignment features?
Glad you asked! Salesforce's out of-the-box assignment functionality is fine for small teams with basic needs. But businesses with larger Sales or Service teams and complex routing requirements need a more robust solution.
Distribution Engine provides a bunch of must-have capabilities for customer facing-teams, including: routing all Salesforce standard and custom objects (not just Leads), round robin distribution, smart distribution based on the workload, availability, account ownership, location and specialist skills of your team members, and detailed reporting.
The other thing many of our users love is that Distribution Engine is much easier to use. Your customer facing teams can all own and update their own workflows in seconds, without any need for code, developers or Salesforce admins!
Can Distribution Engine do Lead-to-Account matching?
Yes. Distribution Engine matches incoming Leads to existing Accounts, Contacts, or other Leads already in your Salesforce org. It uses Salesforce's own matching rules, handles both exact and fuzzy matches, and works across standard fields (first name, last name, company) and any custom fields you use. Lead-to-Lead, Lead-to-Contact, and Lead-to-Account matching are all supported, and it can tell a company domain from a personal one like Gmail.
Once a Lead is matched, you can route it straight to that Account's existing owner, which is handy for account-based selling, named accounts, and making sure high-value customers keep their dedicated rep. You can combine this with round robin or load balancing, and Sticky Assignment keeps repeat enquiries with the same person for a set time.
More detail is in our Knowledge Base.
How quickly can we go live with Distribution Engine?
Faster than most teams expect. You install Distribution Engine from the Salesforce AppExchange, so there's no integration to build and nothing extra to host. Moving over from native assignment rules, in-house Apex, or another tool tends to go quickly too, because you rebuild the logic in a point-and-click interface instead of porting it as code. Some teams have simple use cases and are live within 45 minutes of installation. Most teams are routing live records within a fortnight.
How does this compare to LeanData or Traction Complete?
All three support account-based and territory-based assignment. Distribution Engine’s difference is that it’s 100% Salesforce-native and no-code — ownership is read live from your own org rather than a synced copy, nothing leaves Salesforce, and the ops team can change the rules without a consultant. See our comparison pages, for example Distribution Engine vs. LeanData, for a side-by-side.
